In a battle of unbeaten basketball teams Tuesday night, it was the Barren County Trojans who maintained their unblemished record.
The Trojans broke open a close game with the host Caverna Colonels by posting a 9-1 run to end the third quarter. That run helped lift them to a 68-48 win in Horse Cave.
“We did a good job with Jaucoby (Poore) in the paint by getting him the ball and finishing with baskets,” Barren County boys assistant coach Matt Gardner said.
Barren (6-0 overall) led 38-30 with 3:31 to play in the third quarter after Caverna’s Josh Davis scored inside.
One minute and 20 seconds later, Poore passed the ball inbounds to Dalton Bush, who drilled a 3 and sparked the Trojans’ run. Over the next three minutes of the game, Barren posted an 11-1 run, with the final basket coming as the first points of the fourth quarter on a layup by Poore, and led by 18, 49-31.
Trevor Stephens scored for the Colonels to pause the run, but it didn’t stop it.
Poore scored inside again on Barren’s next possession, then Stephens hit a pair of free throws. Bo Hubbard and Poore scored consecutive baskets for the Trojans to give Barren a 55-35 lead with 5:23 left in the game.
