Water release begins at Barren Reservoir

GLASGOW — The U.S. Corps of Engineers issued a news release last week saying the annual drawdown at Barren Reservoir was being delayed.

However, since that report, conditions have returned to normal and the Corps has resumed its regular schedule of water release.

Corps spokesmen have said the lake might not meet the annual deadline for winter pool  by Dec. 15 but the drawdown is now on normal schedule. The level stood at 534 feet on Tuesday morning.

Fishing has been very good during the unusually warm weather, especially for crappie. Some of my “old-timer” friends have been bringing in limits, some using minnows and others using jigs with chartreuse being the favored color.

Larry Spencer and Freddie Carver had limits Monday, and Ed Darst and Joe Litera also brought in a good string.

The annual Barren River Rod and Gun Club Christmas event will be Saturday night, Dec. 8, at the clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. The club will be providing the turkey and dressing, ham and drinks. Members are asked to bring veggies, salads and/or desserts.

The yearly “big bass” and other fishing prizes will be presented during the awards segment and Santa is scheduled to visit the children in attendance.
