GLASGOW — The state tennis brackets have been set and play begins Thursday at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Caverna’s doubles team of Jackson Bennett and Malcolm Bowman play at 10:30 a.m. EST Thursday against David Kline and Seth Wallace of North Oldham.

The Colonel seniors qualified for the state tournament by reaching the semifinal round of the Fourth Region Tournament in Bowling Green last week. They entered regional action with a play-in game, which they won. They then won three more matches to qualify for state.

In girls’ doubles, Metcalfe County’s Lauren Coffey and Sydney Edwards play at 11:30 a.m. EST Thursday against Baily Ludt and LeAnn Strait of West Jessamine.

Coffey and Edwards entered the Girls Fourth Region Tournament as the No. 1 seeded doubles tandem, but fell in the regional semifinal to No. 4 seed Krislyn Hudson and Emily Tyler of South Warren.

Proposed tennis alignment

In its efforts to more formalize unclassified sports, the Kentucky High School Athletics Association at its January Board of Control meeting offered a draft alignment for tennis that would move Caverna and Hart County out of the Fourth Region and into the Fifth.

“This is part of the Board’s continuing efforts on the part of the membership to place schools in the same region as they are placed in basketball provided the numbers of schools allow for this placement. This decision will allow Tennis to be more consistent with other KHSAA sports (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Softball) that have been realigned recently to the same regional format,” a news release from the KHSAA said.

The alignment, which would begin with the 2014-15 school year, was to be approved during the board of control’s April meeting, according to a press release.

If the alignment is approved, Russell County will join the Fourth Region, where the school already plays in baseball, basketball and softball.
