Falcons take victory over Patriots 63-55

SCOTTSVILLE — It wasn’t the easy victory he’s ever had, and it wasn’t the prettiest one late in the game, but Monroe County coach Steven Kirkpatrick will thankfully take his team’s 63-55 victory over Allen County-Scottsville Friday night.

The win gave the Falcons a 3-3 record in the tough 15th District and moved them into the second seed for the upcoming district tournament.

“Seeds really don’t matter. We wanted to try and stay away from playing Barren County in the first round because they’re hosting the tournament,” said Kirkpatrick. “But just like this game wasn’t easy, whether we play Glasgow or Allen County in the first round, it is going to be a war.”

Barren County finished district play with a 5-1 record, while Allen County and Glasgow finished in a tie with 2-4 district ledgers. A draw for the third and fourth seeds in the tournament will take place on Wednesday at the tournament draw in Glasgow.

The Falcons played inspired from the opening tip Friday as Monroe County grabbed the early lead. Dillon Geralds and Garrett Crowe helped spark the early Monroe County surge as the Falcons led 17-12 at the end of the first period. Monroe County kept the pedal to the metal and outscored Allen County 12-8 in the second quarter to take a 29-20 advantage into the intermission.

“We wanted to come out tonight with a lot of energy, really be aggressive,” Kirkpatrick said. “We were focused on what we wanted to do offensively and defensively. I thought we followed the game plan well, basically played our style of basketball.”

That game plan seemed to include getting the ball inside. Dillon Geralds hit a layup with 2:51 to go in the third period to give the Falcons a 41-33 advantage. The Patriots answered with a bucket of their own and Dillon Geralds hit another jumper from the top of the key to make it 43-35 as the quarter came to a close.
