Lady Falcons trump Lady Scotties, 53 to 37

TOMPKINSVILLE — After losing in the second round of the Touchstone Energy All ‘A’ Tournament last week, Monroe County girls’ basketball coach Dwayne Murray wasn’t sure how his team would respond Tuesday night when the Lady Falcons hosted rival and District 15 foe Glasgow.

The Lady Falcons, led by 27 points from Madison Clements, responded exactly how Coach Murray wanted them to as they knocked off the Lady Scotties by a score of 53-37.

“I was really proud of how the girls responded after the All ‘A’ tournament last week,” said Coach Murray. “I was pleased with our defensive effort tonight. We know that they look for (Shalika) Smith to score inside for them. She’s bigger than anyone we’ve got so we had to try and double her and keep her away from the basket.

“Early, I thought they did a good job of getting her the ball, but I thought we did a good job of adjusting in the second half.”

The Lady Falcons jumped out on top early, leading 10-2 in the first period. But Smith, who had 14 points in the first half, went to work inside and led Glasgow in a 9-0 surge to take the lead at 11-10 with 4:44 to go in the period. Monroe County scored the next five in a row to lead 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams exchanged baskets and Smith picked up some early fouls that limited her playing time in the second period. A basket inside by Clements gave the Lady Falcons a 25-23 lead with 3:25 to go. Monroe County outscored the Lady Scotties 10-3 the rest of the way to lead 35-26 at the intermission.
