REGIONAL TENNIS: Area players qualify for state

GLASGOW — Area tennis players continued their runs in the regional tennis tournaments Monday in Bowling Green. For a pair of doubles teams, they will play on despite losing in the semifinals of their respective regionals.

Metcalfe County’s tandem of Lauren Coffey and Sydney Edwards, the top-seeded girls doubles team, lost in the semifinal round Monday to South Warren’s Hudson and Tyler in a tie-breaker set. The Metcalfe duo dropped the first set 2-6, then won the second set 6-1. The two advance to the state tournament by virtue of reaching the semifinals.

In boys doubles, Caverna’s Malcolm Bowman and Jackson Bennett reached the semifinals of the boys Fourth Region Tournament and in doing so, also qualified for the state tournament.

Bowman and Bennett stunned No. 4 seeded Riley and Cassady of South Warren in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. They dropped their semifinal match to No. 1 seeded Adams and Nelson of Greenwood 1-6, 0-6.

The Colonels tandem began the tournament Saturday with a play-in game, where they defeated Michael Belcher and Brandon Witty of Barren County in a tie-break set. They next defeated a pair of Russellville players 6-0, 6-2, then knocked off Jackson Bell and Hayden Crain of Metcalfe County 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinal round.

In other girls doubles quarterfinal matches, Barren County’s Brooke Simmons and Danielle Nunn fell to Key and Penn of Bowling Green 2-6, 0-6, and Metcalfe’s Lindsey Compton and Molly Matney fell to Bender and Kilgore of Greenwood 2-6, 4-6.

In girls singles, Glasgow’s Palmer Lessenberry lost to Greenwood’s Cassie Pennington 0-6, 0-6.

In boys doubles, Barren County’s Hayden Rickard and Ethan Kiteck fell to Goodwin and Collins of Warren East 3-6, 3-6.

Glasgow’s Foster Vann reached the quarterfinal round of boys singles before losing to fifth-seed Austin Schneller of Greenwood 4-6, 1-6.

The state tournament begin May 14 at UK Boone/Downing Tennis Complex in Lexington.
