Area tennis players advance in girls' regional

BOWLING GREEN — The girls' Region IV Tennis Tournament began Saturday at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green and a number of area players advanced.

Glasgow's Palmer Lessenberry won two matches in tie-breaker sets to land a spot against top seed Cassie Pennington of Greenwood.

Lessenberry defeated No. 8 seed Bianca Soma of Cumberland County 6-2, 3-6, and 10-8 in a tie-break set to get out of the first round.

Next, she knocked off Jill Renfro of Warren East 4-6, 6-4, and 10-8 in a tie-break set.

Barren County's doubles tandem of Brooke Simmons and Danielle Nunn also won their first two matches. They beat No. 7,8 seed Lindsey and Love of South Warrren 2-6, 6-4, and 10-8 in a tie-break set. They next breezed through a match with Gregory and Slayton of Logan County 6-2, 6-1.

Simmons and Nunn next face No. 2 seed Key and Penn of Bowling Green.

Metcalfe County had a pair of doubles teams advance. No. 1 seeded Lauren Coffey and Sydney Edwards downed Russell and Scott of Hart County 6-1, 6-2. No. 5 seeded Lindsey Compton and Molly Matney defeated Glasgow's Morgan Mills and Pooja Santapuram 6-3, 6-2, then defeated Gilbert and Hayes of Warren East 6-3, 6-1.

For Glasgow, the other doubles team of Blair Correll and Megan Jones defeated Haycraft and Welch of Russellville 6-0, 6-1, then lost to Sheth and Suh of Bowling Green 6-2, 3-6, 8-10.

Sloan Bull of Glasgow defeated Logan Bush of Caverna 6-2, 7-5, then fell to No. 5 Nicole Agro of Greenwood 2-6, 2-6.

Barren County's doubles team of Brie Simmons and Mallie Wells lost in the first round to Brewer and Lord of Greenwood 2-6, 1-6.

Both of Barren's singles players lost in the first round. Rebecca Hurley fell to Agro 0-6, 0-6, while Hope Deckard fell to No. 3 Mackenzie Elkins of Bowling Green 0-6, 0-6.

Konnor Gallagher of Metcalfe County won in the first round, beating Chandler Larson of Logan County 7-5, 6-2, but lost to Katrina Hudson of South Warren 3-6, 5-7. Teammate Cheyanne Hart lost in the first round to Katelyn Jones of Logan County 1-6, 2-6.

The tournament resumes today at the park. Action will begin at 3:30 p.m.
