HORSE CAVE —
Cornelius Faulkner, the girls’ head basketball coach at Caverna High School, let out a big sigh of relief recently when he saw the brackets for the 5th Region All ‘A’ Basketball Classic. Always one of the tougher regions in the annual tournament, this year Faulkner believes the Lady Colonels’ path to the title has fewer obstacles than in the past years.
“For the first time in six years, the bracket looks pretty good for us because we’re on the same side as Bethlehem and Fort Knox,” Faulkner said. “Over that same time period, Green County, Bardstown and Washington County all won the tournament. This year, all three of those teams are on the same side of the bracket.”
Caverna opens the tournament on Monday when they host Bardstown Bethlehem. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the winner will advance to the regional semifinals on Tuesday at Fort Knox. The championship game is set for Friday.
“We haven’t played Bethlehem, but I have tried to keep up with them throughout the season,” said Faulkner. “They’re a good team, but I think, if we play our game, then we will be in good shape. You can’t underestimate this Bethlehem team.”
The Bethlehem Banshees come into Monday’s contest with a 4-7 overall record. Bethlehem has lost five of its last six games with the Banshees’ only victory coming over arch rival Bardstown.
