Monroe County’s overtime effort against the Greenwood Gators was good enough to land them in the Rafferty’s/Double Dogs Caveland Classic championship game.
The Falcons opened up with a 12-8 advantage against the Gators in the first period. At halftime, the Falcons kept their lead; the score was 26-21. It was 40-35 Falcons at the end of the third. Things changed during the fourth quarter – the Gators picked up speed and tied the game at 51. The Falcons ended up winning the tournament game, 65-57. The championship game will be at 5 p.m. Saturday against Fort Knox at Edmonson County High School.
Devin Gearlds scored 20 points for the team, while Dillon Geralds scored 13. Gibril Summers rolled out 11 points, while Lincoln Arnett tipped off 10. Garret Crowe scored 7. Skyler Geralds and William Goodman each scored two.
Monroe County Coach Steven Kirkpatrick said the team finished strong.
“In the fourth quarter, the last 32 seconds, we missed three free throws,” Kirkpatrick said. “And we kind of got a little bit down because it went into overtime. But [we] came out in the overtime part and played real well.”
