'Tiny' Bartley comes up big for Lady Scotties

Glasgow Daily Times

TOMPKINSVILLE — She might be the smallest player on the floor each night when the Glasgow Lady Scotties take the basketball court. However, on Friday night guard Elli Bartley stood the tallest for GHS. The 5-foot freshman sharpshooter scored 16 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the first half alone, to lead Glasgow to a 53-48 district victory over Monroe County.

“In the first half, we just wanted to attack their zone,” said Glasgow coach Justin Stinson. “It was obvious they were focusing on stopping (Glasgow center) Shalika (Smith), but we still wanted to play inside out on offense. I thought we did a good job of that.

“But Elli Bartley hit some big shots for us. She shoots 57 percent from 3-point land, so we’re alright with her shooting the long ball.”

“They didn’t do anything we didn’t expect,” said Monroe County coach Dwayne Murray. “Our goal was to try and shut down Smith and (Bre) Glover and I thought we did a good job of that. We wanted to try and make someone else beat us. So, you have to give the Bartley kid credit. She really shot the ball well.”

The Lady Scotties held a double-digit lead at the intermission, holding a 31-19 advantage as the third period began. The Lady Falcons cut slightly into the Glasgow lead as Reagan Turner and Payton Cloyd hit 3-pointers early in the period to make it 36-27 with 4:56 to go. Four straight points from Glover made it 40-27, but Monroe County scored 10 of the next 12 points to come within five, 42-37, as the fourth period was set to start.

Shalika Smith scored to open the final quarter, but Cloyd missed three straight free throws for Monroe County. Glover answered with back-to-back jumpers and the Lady Scotties were out to an 11-point advantage at 48-37. The two teams went back and forth through the rest of the period. Two free throws from Ashley Smith gave the Lady Scotties a 52-38 lead with 2:45 to go in the game.

Monroe County answered with the next seven points to make it 52-45 with 45 seconds remaining in the game.

Glover supported Bartley’s effort for the Lady Scotties with 14 points on the night. Shalika Smith had six points and Allie Chapman came off the bench to score five. Emily Alexander had five points and Hydeia Depp scored three. Ashley Smith and Heidi Holgate scored two points each.

Cloyd led Monroe County in scoring with 13 points. Reagan Turner and Kayla Murray scored 11 points each. Kellimae Polston scored five points, while Lauren Turner and Sarah Wilson had four points each.

“Our free throws really killed us down the stretch. I think we were 5-of-12 in free throws in the fourth quarter alone,” Murray said. “But I am proud of my girls and the way they played tonight.”

“We got a little stagnate in the second half,” Stinson said. “We weren’t attacking the zone like we usually do. But you have to give Monroe County credit, they hit some big shots. And basketball is a lot easier when you’re making shots.”
