HARTFORD - Barren County made its early lead stand up.
The Trojans built a 28-0 lead in the first half and rolled up 363 yards of total offense en route to a 34-26 win over homestanding Ohio County on Friday.
After getting shut out for two straight games, Barren scored 28 points in the first 18:03 of the game on Friday.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Barren coach Jeff Richey said. “We took a 28-0 lead and jumped out early. We took the big lead and they fought back. But our guys held on.
“It feels good to win and get back to 2-4.”
Colton Phelps found Colby Long for a 34-yard pass play early in the first quarter that set up the Trojans’ first score. Kris Aquino ran it in from eight yards out as Barren took a 7-0 lead just 3:10 into the game.
Phelps scored on a 20-yard run later in the first quarter as the Trojans led 14-0.
Barren’s big play barrage kept things going in the second quarter. Gill Thomas threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Jones for a 21-0 lead with 10:48 left in the opening half.
Phelps scored on a 10-yard run with 5:57 left. Barren led 28-0.
But Ohio’s offense came alive late in the first half. Quarterback Brandy Moore scored on a 13-yard run with 1:02 left and cut the lead to 28-7.
The shifty Moore scored on an 18-yard run in the third quarter and Cody Murphy also added a score to pull Ohio within 28-19.
Murphy’s second touchdown run of the night, a 29-yarder, pulled the Eagles within two, at 28-26, with 9:34 left in the game.
But the Trojans had one more score left in them. Thomas pushed it in from one yard out with 3:50 left in the game for Barren’s first score since the second quarter. The rushing touchdown gave the Trojans a 34-26 lead.
Richey said his team’s offensive effort, which was the most points that the Trojans have scored in a game this season, was due to several factors.
“We tried to emulate some things that we saw that other teams had success against them with when our coaches broke down the film,” Richey said. “This week we spread it out a little bit more. We threw it a little bit when they expected us to run it and we did a better job of mixing it up.”
Phelps led Barren on the ground with 98 yards and two scores. He also threw for 37 yards. Tim Sneed added 54 yards on the ground and Aquino had 26. Thomas threw for 97 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 15 yards and a score.
The Trojans improved to 2-4 with the win. The Eagles, who have now lost five straight, fell to 1-5.
Barren returns to district play Friday with a 7 p.m. home contest against Warren Central.
