Barren County grabbed an early lead in game one and rallied late in game two, but Allen County-Scottsville held off the Trojanettes 25-20 and 26-24 on Thursday night.

“Tonight I was just really proud of them, especially for that second game that they did battle back and tied it back up at 24,” Barren coach Tina Muse said. “It was a big job for us to be back on the serving line and Kelsey Trowbridge did a nice job of serving and bringing us back.

“I keep telling the girls individually, as long as they show spurts like that, that to me means we’re getting better as a team that they’ll battle back on something like that and not give up.”

The Trojanettes raced out to a 6-1 advantage early in game one behind a pair of Trowbridge kills and an ace from both Hilary Rickard and Shelby Houchens.

Barren extended its lead to 10-4 on Allen miscues, before the Lady Patriots went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 11-9.

Houchens’ kill pushed the lead to 13-11, but it was all Allen after that. The Lady Patriots used an 8-1 surge to take control for a 19-14 lead.

Barren battled back to cut the lead to 21-19 before Allen pulled away for the win.

“I felt like we stared off strong and had a nice lead right there and then offensively we just made some bad choices or we made some mistakes on our own,” Muse said.

Game two was a back-and-forth-battle early on. Houchens had back-to-back aces and Barren took advantage of an Allen attack error for a 7-4 lead.

The Lady Patriots jumped back to knot the score at 9-9 and then used a 4-0 run for a 13-9 advantage.

Allen led by as many as five points late in the game, but Barren didn’t give up. The Trojanettes battled back from down 18-13 to make a game of it.

The Lady Patriots led 24-20 and needed just one point to put the Trojanettes away. An Allen attack error gave Barren life and consecutive aces from Trowbridge pulled the Trojanettes within one at 24-23.

Alissa Hampton knotted the game on a kill from the left corner of the net that just stayed in bounds in the back right corner. That pulled things even at 24-all.

But Allen came back and ended the match with back-to-back kills for the win.

Trowbridge led Barren with five kills and three aces. Houchens had four aces, Rickard added two and Hampton had a pair of kills.
