SOMERSET - Metcalfe County gave up 23 points off turnovers and Somerset pulled away in the third quarter for a 57-30 win over the Hornets on Friday night.
Each team is now 1-1 on the season.
Somerset got on the scoreboard first to take a 7-0 lead. Daniel DeLeon scored on a 10-yard run with 1:34 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 7-6.
The Briar Jumpers scored on a safety and added two touchdowns in the second quarter for a 23-6 lead.
DeLeon scored his second touchdown of the game with 4:55 left in the first half. The senior scored on a 59-yard run to cut the lead to 23-12.
The Hornets cut the lead to one score with 1:15 left in the half. DeLeon scored on an 11-yard play that cut the lead to 23-18.
The Briar Jumpers put the game away in the third quarter. They built a 50-18 lead in the third quarter. The Hornets’ next score was DeLeon’s fourth of the night, a 22-yard run with 10:52 left in the game to cut the lead to 50-24.
Colton Satterly scored Metcalfe’s final touchdown. Satterly scored on a 53-yard run with 3:24 left in the game.
DeLeon rushed for over 200 yards for the second week in a row. The senior rushed 26 times for 234 yards and four scores. Satterly added 10 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Zack Morgan hit 4-of-14 passes for 76 yards. He threw one interception.
Michael Bennet led the Hornets with three catches for 63 yards.
The Hornets open up at home Friday with a 7 p.m. game against Logan County. Logan is 0-2 on the year with a 33-18 loss to Butler County to open the season and a 47-7 defeat at Muhlenberg South on Friday.
