Barren County girls soccer coach Lee McFarland told his team before Tuesday night’s match that a win could start to turn around the team’s season.

The Trojanettes took the first step in the right direction with a 4-0 win over previously unbeaten LaRue County. Inga Steenbergen scored a pair of first half goals to lead Barren to the win.

“I told them before this game that the team we’re playing hasn’t lost any. They’re 3-0,” McFarland said. “We can turn our season around, but if we’re going to do it we need to start now.

“It’s nice to get a win.”

The Trojanettes (1-2-2) outshot the Lady Hawks (3-1) by an almost 2-1 margin in the first half.

Steenbergen put Barren on the scoreboard at the 29:40 mark of the opening half with a goal that hit the LaRue goalie’s hands and bounced into the net for the score. She added a goal with 10:14 left in the opening half to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Trojanettes’ stepped up their defensive effort Tuesday with their first shutout of the season. The previous low for goals allowed had been two in a tie against Franklin-Simpson. Both Kayla Murphy and Lindsey McFarland played in goal for Barren.

“The defense, I thought, did a good job,” McFarland said. “We’ve been working on pulling up our offsides traps. When you do that you need everybody to go at once and trust. We did that one time and we had about five of them offsides and the girl never made the pass. But still, that kept her, she had to play by herself against our defense. That worked and I think the girls saw that.

“I’ve told them over and over, If it doesn’t work, it’s on me. When I tell you to pull, pull up. It happened to work that time. We didn’t get the call, but we got the defense that we wanted. They’re coming along pretty well.”

Devon Stuart and Sydney Wininger each scored for the Trojanettes in the second half.

“I think it’s (the win) good for the girls too. It helps boost their morale,” McFarland said. “They didn’t play their best game tonight. They know they still have a lot that they need to work on. But we took advantage of some situations and were able to capitalize on them.”

Barren is back in action Thursday at Warren East. That match will be played at the Lovers Lane Park soccer facility. It was moved there because of a scheduling conflict at East.
