The Barren County, Glasgow and Metcalfe County cross country teams kicked off the 2008 season Monday at a meet hosted by Barren.

The Barren boys finished fourth and the Glasgow boys finished seventh, while the Trojanettes placed three in the top 10 for a second place finish and the Lady Scotties finished fifth. Metcalfe had individuals run in both races.

“A lot of the kids beat their times,” Glasgow coach Johnny Polson said. “They all performed very well. I was proud of all of them.

“I was surprised with some of them. They came in a lot faster than I was expecting, I think faster than they were expecting.”

Bowling Green won the boys race and Muhlenberg North finished second. Bowling Green’s Chase Russell finished first in the individual standings with a time of 11:24.80 for the 3,200 meter race.

Barren’s Campbell Beals finished sixth to lead area competitors. He finished the course in 12:10.08. Mason Dunbar finished 20th, Eric Skipworth took 22nd, Ryan Metzger finished 26th and Joe Paul Johnson took 34th.

“I thought we had a good race for the first time out,” Barren boys coach Steve Metzger said. “I wasn’t real pleased with our times today, but I was pleased with how competitive we were.

“Several of these guys, it was their first race. Your first race is hard. You’ve kind of got to get your running legs underneath you. I’m looking forward to the next one. We’ll get better.”

Dustin Thomerson led Glasgow with a time of 12:57.65. He finished 17th. Pranav Santapuram finished 45th, followed by Cody Shirley in 47th and Jacob Poynter in 48th.

Jason Shirley finished 31st with a time of 14:34.50 to lead Metcalfe.

A trio of Trojanettes finished in the top 10 individually to help the team to a second place finish. Kaley Dunbar led Barren with a 15:06.67 and eighth place finish. Megan Bunch was less than a second behind Dunbar and took ninth in 15:07.05. Ally Davis finished 10th in 15:24.64. Cassie Radish added a 19th place finish followed by Chloe Caudel in 21st.

“I think we ran strong,” Barren coach Brittany Evans said. “Any time that you have three finish in the top 10 is a good day. I’m pleased with how we performed today.”

Natalie Shields finished 27th in 16:29.62 to lead the young Lady Scottie squad. Alli Chapman finished 41st, Audrey Gatlin took 58th, Lily Campbell finished 59th and Bethany Gaujot finished 66th.

“They had the right attitude going into this one,” Polson said. “This is a learning experience for the young girls. It was an opportunity for them to experience competition for the first time. I think that caused them to rise to the occasion.”

Holly Acree finished 52nd to lead the Lady Hornets. She had a time of 19:43.14. Mohogany Morrison also finished 77th for Metcalfe.
