A couple of big runs proved to be the deciding factor in Barren County’s 2-0 loss to Warren Central on Tuesday night.

The Lady Dragons used a 12-1 game one run to pull away and put game two away with an 8-1 run in a 25-12, 25-16 win over the Trojanettes.

“Sometimes we hit a wall,” Barren coach Tina Muse said. “Two or three things go wrong and it just seems to multiply in this sport.

“It just turns so quickly. It’s more of a mental game than I think some people realize.”

Game one was tied 1-1 and the Trojanettes got a kill to knot the game at 2-2. With the score tied at 3-all, the Lady Dragons surged ahead with a 12-1 run for a 15-4 advantage.

Barren didn’t get any closer than 12 the rest of the way in the 25-12 defeat.

The Trojanettes took advantage of several Lady Dragon errors early in game two. Kelsey Trowbridge and Kelsey Mitchell each got a kill to keep things close. Trowbridge added a block and Hilary Rickard’s ace pulled Barren to within one point of Central at 11-12.

Putting game one behind them was key for the Trojanettes early in game two.

“I just talked to them about the first game was over and they needed to try to play to get to the third game if we were going to pull out a win with it,” Muse said. “As far as the girls, they were responsive, they understood that, and I think they did.”

But as soon as Barren pulled to within one, Central used an 8-1 spurt to pull away for good.

The Trojanettes’ young squad, which returns just two starters off last year’s team, fell to 0-3 with the loss. The Lady Dragons moved to 7-1 with the win.

“I’ve got two returning starters and I’ve got several out there that’s in new roles,” Muse said. “We have a new offense. We’re going to a one setter offense and that’s a completely new system for us. They’re working hard in practice.”

The Trojanettes are back in action Thursday with a district match at Edmonson County.

“I plan on us getting better,” Muse said. “We had Allen County last night (Monday) and lost, went three games in it, but the team that showed up against Allen County last night would beat ours in the ground tonight. They were just real strong. They showed me what they can do. We weren’t here tonight.”
