Football scrimmages begin tonight

GLASGOW

Although the start of football season is still two weeks away, it unofficially begins tonight for four area teams.

Glasgow, Barren County, Metcalfe County and Monroe County each hit the field tonight as the first week of scrimmages get underway.

Glasgow is in a jamboree at Edmonson County. The Scotties will face Edmonson, Logan County and Clinton County in a series of 50 minute scrimmages. Things get underway at 6 p.m.

“We’ll probably script 10-15 plays and run the same thing against all three teams, that way we’ll see if we’re able to adjust against three different defenses,” Glasgow coach Billy Lindsey said.

The Scotties will start off against Edmonson and then face Logan. They’ll end the scrimmage against Clinton.

Lindsey said Glasgow will run its base defense against Edmonson and Logan, two teams that run a lot of spread offense.

“We’ve been working a lot on our run defense, so this will allow us to get more reps in on pass defense,” Lindsey said.

Glasgow was 8-3 a year ago with a first round playoff loss to Metcalfe.

Barren heads north to Pleasure Ridge Park to take on the Class 6A Panthers.

The Trojans were 5-6 last year and look to replace a bulk of their starters on both sides of the ball.

Metcalfe will travel to Russellville for its first scrimmage. The Hornets are coming off the school’s most successful gridiron season in history with a regional championship. They were one game away from playing in the state finals.

“It’s Friday and it’s football time,” Metcalfe coach Larry Harbison said. “I’m excited to get started.”

The Hornets lost a bulk of their starters from a year ago. They’ll have to replace nine of 11 starters on the defensive side of the ball and eight on the offensive side. Only two offensive lineman and running back Daniel DeLeon return for 2008.

“The key for us is to stay healthy this year,” Harbison said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to catch up, especially with our quarterback just getting back.”

Sophomore Zack Morgan was out early during practice while recovering from hernia surgery. Morgan has been cleared to play and is at practice.
