Monroe County football coach John Petett is pleased with his team thus far.

The Falcons wrapped up their ninth practice of fall camp on Thursday evening.

“I feel like we’ve done good,” Petett said. “The weather’s been great on us compared to last year. We’ve had a good practice.

“Our numbers have been excellent. I think we’ve been averaging 71 out of 73 every day, and the two that miss normally call in an excused absence, so I couldn’t ask for anything better up to this point. This was our ninth day and I’m tickled to death.”

The Falcons went in full pads on Thursday. It was their second day in pads.

“I hope next week we’re not as sore as we are today,” Petett said. “We’re pretty sore because we jumped right into the fire yesterday.”

Monroe hopes to improve off last year’s disappointing 2-9 campaign. The Falcons are counting on their upper classmen, notably 18 seniors, to turn things around in 2008.

“We just have great leadership,” Petett said. “I’ve got 73 kids - 18 seniors - and everything they do they do hard, and they want to work hard, and they want to win this year.”

The most notable change for Monroe this year is on the offensive side of the ball where Petett will call the plays. It’s the first time in five years that Petett will be the playcaller.

“I’m calling the offense this year, the first time I’ve called it in five years,” Petett said. “Basic running plays, but just a change in number, the whole system, so it’s taking a while to grasp onto it.

“It’s a whole different terminology scheme. That’s probably the biggest problem we’re having right now.”

Although things are early - with about a month to go until kickoff - the Monroe coach is happy with what he sees out of his team so far.

“It’s a little early. We feel like we’re a smart, knowledgeable team,” Petett said. “We’ll make good decisions. We’ve got a lot of good skill athletes.”
