Barren County football coach said he was pleased with his team’s aggressiveness as the Trojans wrapped up their second week of practice.
“I like the aggressive nature that we’ve came out with,” Richey said. “We’ve utilized out time well in the helmets only period. We’ve got a lot of work done on our formations, sets, motion and the like, and we’re way ahead of that part of the game.”
Richey said the team will get into shoulder pads this week.
The 2008 campaign will be the Trojans’ second in the spread offense. Barren returns experience on the line and at running back, but is searching for answers at quarterback and at wide receiver.
“We’ve got a four-way battle for quarterback and we’re looking for people to step up as receivers,” Richey said.
Richey said being in the offense for the second year has helped in a variety of ways. The Trojans’ coach
“Where it helps us, people are lined up in the right places, they know the calls and the formations,” Richey said. “Where it hurts us is depth. We’re still young in some places.”
He added that although there may be slight changes, depending on personnel, the system will remain in place.
“We’re not changing anything,” Richey said. “We’ll always adjust what we do to the people that we have in the system, but we’re not changing what we do.”
The defense has also improved according to the head coach. Richey said the Trojans return many players with experience on that side of the ball.
“I’m really impressed with the way the kids are working on defense,” Richey said. “They’re doing what it takes, making the necessary calls and adjustments.
“Last year we had to go out and outscore people. This year hopefully our defense will be able to keep us in a lot of games. I think they’re capable of that.”
And as the Trojans head into pads this week, there’s still a lot of spots open.
“We’ve got a lot of kids competing for spots,” Richey said. “There’s nothing that’s locked up. I’m happy about the competition.”
The Trojans first scrimmage is Aug. 15 at Pleasure Ridge Park. Their second scrimmage is Aug. 22 at Russell County.
Barren opens the 2008 season Aug. 30 in the T.J. Samson Bowl against Metcalfe County at Trojan Field.
