Bruins 15s win wood bat tourney

GLASGOW

It came down to the final inning, but the Glasgow Bruins 15s team came through in the clutch.

The Bruins rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to defeat Warren East 3-1 and claim the Long John Silvers/A&W All American Foods Wooden Bat Tournament title at Richardson Field on Sunday.

Trey Alexander reached on a one-out walk to start the seventh inning rally and moved to third on Casey Evans’ single. Evans advanced to second on the play on the relay throw to third. Tyler Howard’s single drove in Alexander and Evans to give Glasgow a 2-1 lead. Howard scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Howard, then in his third inning of work on the mound, shut down East to give the Bruins the tournament crown. Griffin Smith went the first four innings for Glasgow and gave up just one run.

Howard led Glasgow offensively with three singles. He drove in two runs and scored a run. Smith had a double while Parker Cash and Evans each had a single.

The Bruins had two runners on in the second but failed to score. They had their best early opportunity in the fourth inning.

Glasgow had the bases loaded with no one out. A shallow fly ball into right field prevented a run from crossing the plate for the first out. Spencer Bradley then connected on a hard-hit ball right back to East’s pitcher, who threw to home for the second out before Bradley was doubled up at first to end the inning.

Glasgow, the second seed after pool play, advanced to the title tilt with a 5-0 win over Adair County earlier on Sunday. The Bruins took advantage of a walk, an error, a hit batter and a wild pitch to score two runs in the first for a 2-0 lead.

Glasgow added to its lead with two runs in the fifth. Evans started the rally with a single and Smith walked. Cash drove in Evans with a base hit and Smith scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-0. The Bruins scored their final run in the sixth.

The Bruins finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark. Their only loss was a 4-2 defeat to East on Saturday.
