The Barren County 10 and under all-stars needed little more than the fourth and sixth innings as they beat Edmonson County 13-7 and advanced to the second round of the Cal Ripken District 14 Tournament at Edmonton’s Memorial Park on Thursday night.

Barren starting pitcher Chase Dile had trouble in the first inning, allowing four Edmonson runs on three hits and a walk.

Those four runs, however, were the last Edmonson would see cross the plate until the sixth inning.

Although Barren scored two in the second inning, it wasn’t until the fourth that it seized complete control of the game.

A double in the fourth by Colton Montgomery gave Barren the lead for good and, in one of the few 1-2-3 innings of the night, Will Jackson struck out Edmonson’s side, setting the pace for the rest of the game.

Edmonson’s pitching, anchored by starter Dylan Waldrop, kept the game close until the sixth, when passed balls tossed by Edmonson relievers and multiple hits allowed every member of Barren’s lineup to step to the plate, en route to a six-run inning.

Erratic relief pitching in bottom of the inning let Edmonson make up a few runs, but Barren’s 13-4 lead going in to the bottom of the inning proved to be too much to overcome.

Coach Greg Bowen said the game provided a good opportunity for players to pitch meaningful innings in a tournament game.

“In the fourth (inning), once we jumped out, we decided to save our pitchers,” Bowen said. “In these tournaments, you’re limited on pitchers, so we used some (kids) that we wanted to give some innings.”

The win means Barren County will meet Green County in a second-round game tonight at Memorial Park.

The tournament stretches into Saturday and Sunday, and will conclude Monday night with the championship game.

The champion will advance to the state tournament in Henderson.
