Summer camp
YMCA summer camp continues this week with the theme “Wet and Wild.”
The highlight of this week is a trip to Beech Bend in Bowling Green. Other activities scheduled are all connected to the water, weather-permitting.
Registration for summer camp is still available, and will be throughout the summer. Parents can register their children, ages 4 to 12, for one week or multiple weeks.
YMCA summer camp runs from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch is provided to all participants. Cost is $65 for YMCA members and $70 for non-members. Children should bring a swimsuit and towel.
For the trip to Beech Bend, there is a one-time fee of $20. This includes admission to the park and also lunch while the kids are there.
Call the YMCA Welcome Center at 651-9622 for more information.
Couples dance
A second round of Couples Dance is scheduled to begin July 25 at the YMCA.
Taught by longtime dance instructor Rebecca Huckleberry, the dance class is for couples who want to learn ballroom and other types of dance. Classes are 90 minutes long.
Cost is $50 per couple for YMCA members and $70 for community members. Five classes are offered on consecutive Fridays, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The YMCA Nursery remains open throughout the class for parents with children.
Call the YMCA Welcome Center at 651-9622 for more information or to register.
Tour de YMCA
The YMCA offers “Tour de YMCA” for those people who want to be actively involved in the upcoming Tour de France.
Following the race dates, the Tour de Y began July 5 and takes place all month. Spinning classes scheduled at the YMCA generally follow the tour’s schedule. That means that simulated hill-climbing takes place in spinning classes on days when the Tour is doing a lot of mountain climbing. Conversely, on days of time trials, the spinning classes will focus on sprinting.
Spinning classes are offered in the morning and evening every weekday at the YMCA.
T-shirts, either in the same yellow color that the Tour de France winner is awarded, or in white, will be awarded to those participants who meet the challenge. Cost is $6.
Remember that the YMCA just purchased 10 new Schwinn spinners to replace a fleet of well-used but durable bikes. Comments from those who are now regularly using the new spinners have been very positive.
Call the YMCA Welcome Center for more information about the Tour de YMCA, or to obtain a schedule of spinning classes.
Kids night out
Kids Night Out takes place Saturday (July 12) at the YMCA.
This monthly event provides an evening of entertainment for children ages 3 to 11 to give parents a chance to enjoy a kid-free evening. During their time at the Y, youth participate in swimming, a craft, watch a movie, and spend time in the gym and on the maze. Also, a meal is served to all children.
Rates vary according to member or non-member and the number of kids in the same family attending. Call the Welcome Center for more information.
