Area doubles teams fall in second round

LEXINGTON

The Glasgow boys doubles team of Joel Padgett and Brett Flener picked up a first round win, as did the Metcalfe County girls duo of Callie Jesse and Kendra Clark, in the first day of the state tennis tournament on Thursday.

Both teams lost in the second round, also held Thursday, ending their respective runs for a state title.

Padgett and Flener opened with a 6-3, 6-3 first round win over Nate Ploskonka and Drew Stevens of Garrard County. The Scottie duo then fell in round two to Ryne Least and Zack Lewis of Lexington Catholic, 6-2, 6-2.

Glasgow’s Michael Morosa fell in the first round of singles play with a 6-3, 6-2, loss to Jeremy Blum of DuPont Manual.

Metcalfe County’s Trey Shirley, the 4th Region singles runner-up, fell to Richard Canelas of Highlands, 6-2, 6-1, also in the first round.

In girls play, the Lady Hornet duo of Jesse and Clark opened play with a come-from-behind win over Mallory Perkins and Helen Crenshaw of Hopkinsville. The Metcalfe team won 4-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Jesse and Clark fell in the second round to North Oldham’s Stephanie Townsend and Rachel Wurster, 6-2, 6-3.

The Metcalfe team of Taylor Noe and Sydney Edwards fell in the first round to Morgan County’s Lacy May and Emily McKenzie. After opening with a 6-2 win in the first set, the Lady Hornet team fell 6-4 in the second and lost the final set 7-5.

Both of Metcalfe’s singles players lost in the first round. Aspen Edwards, the 4th Region girls singles champion, fell to Elisa DeCamp of Henry Clay, 6-2, 6-2. Megan Stephens lost to Lexington Catholic’s Ann Morris, 6-3, 6-1.
