The Monroe County Falcons will open the 15th District Baseball Tournament on Monday against No. 1 seed Allen County-Scottsville.

The Falcons drew the Patriots in the first round when the Pats won a coin toss with the Barren County Trojans to determine the top seed in the tournament. Both teams finished the season with only one district loss.

“Allen County is a good team,” said Monroe coach Max Petett. “They are a scrappy team and they have been playing well this year. We didn’t play too well against them in the regular season. Our kids have been playing a lot better here as in late and there have been some improvements. If we can play consistent defense and have a good night at the plate we will have a good chance to compete.”

The 10-17 Falcons enter the district with 10-batting only .279 a team. The Patriots won both of the regular season meetings by a favorable margin, but Petett says his team comes in with no pressure being the fourth seed.

“We were probably the most relaxed group there,” said Petett. “We are sitting in the fourth spot. We didn’t win any district games and that’s where we knew we where going to end up. We didn’t have plans for that but with the young team that we got I don’t think many people expect us to come in and win other than ourselves. We will be able to be loose and comfortable and lay it on the line.”

Petett says the key to winning this ball game is offense.

The Falcons have three players who are all hitting at or above .300. Neil Wilson’s batting average is .300. Jackson Arnett’s is .338 and Spencer Petett is batting .351 with two home runs on the season. They will all have to be ready to play and put the bat on the ball, according to Petett.

“We are going to have to hit the ball and manufacture some runs. That’s going to require us to play some small ball and getting on the base path and getting across the plate,” he said.

Petett has named his starter for Monday.

“We are going to be expecting a good game from our pitcher, Andy Branch,” said Petett. “If he pitches well, then we typically compete well. We have had some big games this year and some big wins when Andy is on the mound, especially when he’s throwing the ball with some accuracy, and that keeps us in the game.”

Petett said inexperience has contributed to his team’s win total, but the post season is a time for redemption.

The coach said he has told his team from day one that the regular season was preparation for the tournament.

The boys’ district games will be at Richardson Field in Glasgow.

The Falcons will play Monday at 5:30 p.m.
