Hornets set to host district

The Metcalfe County Hornets are both the top seeds and the hosts of the 16th District Baseball Tournament this year.

They open play at 5 p.m. Monday against the No. 4 seed Clinton County Bulldogs at Memorial Park in Edmonton.

Metcalfe coach Brian Garrett says that this year’s district teams are very evenly matched and any of them could win.

“At the two and three seeds we have Cumberland County and Russell County,” said Garrett. “They are both very solid teams. I think Cumberland is 17-8 and Russell County is 18-11. Our district is pretty well balanced this year and we haven’t had that in the past as much. It should be a really good tournament and you will have to play well to win this tournament and that’s how it should be.”

The Hornets have a 17-8 record with a team batting average of .289 and a 2.63 team earned run average (ERA). The Hornets won both of the regular season meetings, the first game 4-0 and the second 12-2.

“They are a dangerous team,” Garrett said of the Bulldogs. “They are much improved. Their coach has done a really good job and they have a bunch of young kids over there that play well.”

The Metcalfe baseball team, much like the football team and the basketball team, is senior laden and Garrett is depending on his team’s experience to pull them through the opening round.

Senior Winston Harbison will get the nod on the mound for the Hornets. He is coming into the tournament with a 5-1 record, throwing 48 innings on the season and a 1.02 ERA. “What we are hoping is that he can go out and control the tempo,” said Garrett. “He has pitched for us for four years and he knows how to work the hitters, keep the tempo in our favor and keep their timing off. What we are looking for is what we expect on the mound. He has been through this before and he will get us off with the right start.”

In order to win the game, Garrett said that they will not do anything different from what they have done all season.

“We have got to take care of the basic things.” Garrett said “We have got to make their pitcher work and put the ball in play consistently. Stuff that we have tried to work on every game. We have worked all year preparing for the tournament. That’s why we play all of those regular season game. We are going to do the same as we been doing – hit the ball hard on the ground, get ahead of the hitters, work on defense, limit our mistakes and put the pressure on them.”

The coach will rely on the meat of his offensive lineup to carry the hitting load for the Hornets. The Hornets 3-4-5-6 — Wes Billingsley, Will Warf, Ryan Coffee and Winston Harbison — hitters will make a big difference if they continue to carry the team on their shoulders, according to Garrett.

“They are our top four hitters,” said Garrett. “They lead the team in hits and runs batted in. They are kind of our stable. If they produce some runs for us we might be in good shape.”
