Fishing front looking up

Things are really looking up on the fishing front. We received a very encouraging report this week from Bill and Todd Logsdon.
It was so encouraging that I'm going to show it here just how Bill sent it to me.
“Contrary to rumor, there are still fish in Barren River Lake. The lake level is back to normal and the fishing has really picked up and getting better every day.
The hybrids have been very active; several good catches have been reported. Casting crank baits and drifting shad across the points have produced several good hybrids.
The bass action has picked up on several different patterns. Some are throwing lizards, brush hogs and spinnerbaits in cover near the bank in 2 feet to 4 feet of water. Some are coming off secondary points as well as steep main lake banks with cover.
Some crappie are being caught also on cover and drops in 10 feeet to 12 feet of water.
If you like to catch catfish, the next two weeks should be hot. Catfish begin to spawn on the ‘full moon’ of May 20. All you need is a tub of crickets or box of nitecrawlers and fish the steep banks 3 to 4 feet deep.
If you want some fast action on ultra-light tackle, the bluegill and shellcrackers also go on the bed on full moon of May. Crickets and red worms are their favorite. If you are fishing the lake they will be in the backs of the coves in 2 to 4 feet of water. If you have a favorite pond they will be near the bank. Just look for a pan shaped clean spot on the bottom in 1 to 2 feet of water.
Fishing below the dam at Barren has really picked up since the Corps has reduced the discharge. They are catching a variety of fish. Just be prepared for a lot of fellow fishermen.
Lake Cumberland is still producing good catches of stripers and walleye. Best fishing is on the main lake and the large coves just off the main water. The section from the State Dock to the dam has been good. Lot of fish being caught at night, after the moon goes down.
Trout and stripers have been coming from the Cumberland river this past week between the dam and Burkesville. Talked with one angler this week that had three 18-inch trout and several other ‘slots’ he caught casting 3-inch minnow type crankbaits.”
The destination for the “oldtimers” this week was the Cumberland River thanks to some info. from Lewis Carter who reported good catches of sauger.
I was unable to make the trip Tuesday but those who did had a good day on the river. The catch included sauger, walleye, white bass, trout, and a few skipjack, one big enough to break Uncle Ed’s rod when he tried to lift it in the boat.
Larry Spencer and Rollin Dickson had sauger, walleye and bass.
Lewis and his father-in-law had a limit of sauger and Ed Darst and Wilbur Carroll caught mostly rainbow and white bass.
All in all it was a good day of fishing. Tentative plans for next week call for shellcrackers on Dale Hollow.
