Myatt, Edmunds lead Trojans to win

Barren County got the timely hits and solid pitching it needed to pick up a 3-1 win over Russell County on Tuesday.

The Trojans got a two-out, two-RBI double from Mason Myatt to pull ahead in the third inning while Tyler Edmunds tossed seven solid innings of work for the win.

“We got the timely hits when we needed it,” Barren coach Scott Gillon said. “We’ve had some games this year when we’ve had 10 or 11 hits and couldn’t get the hit when we needed it. Today we had five hits, but they were all with guys in scoring position. Mason (Myatt) came up and had a big two-run double with two outs, and then I think he scored one of our other runs by getting a double. He had a good day at the plate.”

Edmunds gave up a run on five hits to pick up the win. In seven innings, he struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

“We had a good job on the mound,” Gillon said. “Tyler did a good job. He kept them off-balanced and we made plays in the field. If we can combine those three things right there, (timely hitting, pitching and defense) that’s a good recipe for success. And the one error we had shouldn’t have been made.”

The Trojans broke a scoreless tie in the third inning. Dillon Clark reached on an infield single with one out and Blake Crabtree reached on an error with two away. That brought up Myatt, who doubled to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

Barren’s defense snuffed out a potential Russell run in the fourth inning. The Lakers had a runner at second and two outs when they added a single that was stopped from heading into left field on a diving play by third baseman Zach Gibson, who dove to his right to stop the ball. Gibson, while still on the ground, made the flip to shortstop Tyler Richardson. When Russell’s runner rounded third base and headed for home, Richardson fired to catcher Jonathan Riddle at the plate, who made the tag to end the inning.

“That was kind of a head’s up play there,” Gillon said. “Gibby (Zach Gibson) did a good job of coming off the bag. He dove and made a good play. And then I think he was trying to flip it up to Tyler so he could make the play at first. It just so happened the kid from Russell County kept running and we ended up getting him out at the plate.”

Russell used a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut Barren’s lead to 2-1.

The Trojans crossed the plate again in the sixth. Myatt led off the inning with a double and scored on Tyler Miller’s single to push the Trojans’ lead to 3-1.

Myatt had two doubles on the day to lead Barren offensively. He drove in two runs and scored a run.

Blake Crabtree, Riddle, Clark and Miller each had one hit.

Barren improved to a region-leading 22-9 with the win. Russell fell to 18-11 with the loss.

“Russell County is a quality ball club,” Gillon said. “They’ve won 18 games this year and they’re always just one of the regional favorites every year. To get a win like that against Russell County, that’s a quality win for us.”

The Trojans are back in action today with a 5 p.m. make up home game against Bowling Green, which was originally scheduled for Monday but postponed due to field conditions. Barren hosts Hart County Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Franklin-Simpson Friday at 5 p.m. to conclude regular season play.
