A pair of Metcalfe County singles players and doubles teams from Barren County, Caverna and Metcalfe advanced to today’s quarterfinals with strong performances at the Fourth Region girls tennis tournament on Tuesday.
Metcalfe’s Megan Stephens, seeded second, picked up a second round win after opening with a bye. Lady Hornet Aspen Edwards, seeded fifth, had two wins to advance.
Metcalfe’s Callie Jesse and Kendra Clark, Barren’s Hilary Rickard and Laura Ross and Caverna’s Dylan Denison and Shelby Banks advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play.
Both boys and girls quarterfinals and semifinals will be today at Barren County High School. Start time is between 3:30-4 p.m. The finals are scheduled for Thursday, also at BCHS.
Stephens, the top ranked area player, picked up a 6-0, 6-0, win over Glasgow’s Maclean Lessenberry in Tuesday’s second round to advance. Stephens will face seventh-seeded Catyn Crofford of Logan this afternoon. Lessenberry defeated Hart County’s Presley Wilkerson, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the second round.
Edwards, seeded fifth, had a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins to advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals. She defeated Barren’s Whitney Botts in the opening round before topping Glasgow’s Chandra Taylor in the second round. Edwards will see the top seed of the tournament in today’s quarterfinal match in Greenwood’s Hallie Pennington. Taylor advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Russellville’s Jaclynne Murillo.
Caverna’s Jamie Hatcher and Monroe County’s Jenna Reecer each had opening round wins before falling in the second round. Hatcher opened with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Holly Lawrence of Warren East. Reecer picked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Russellville’s Elizabeth Corbin.
In doubles play, the second-seeded Lady Hornet squad of Jesse and Clark advanced to today’s quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0, straight set win over Hart’s Astrid Worren and Benke. The Metcalfe duo will face Bowling Green’s Anne Thomas Donnelly and Amanda Wilson, who are seeded eighth.
Rickard and Ross also won 6-0, 6-0, with a win over Roberts and Burrell of Franklin-Simpson. The Trojanette duo, seeded third, will face Greenwood’s Edwards and Adams, who are seeded fifth.
The sixth-seeded Caverna squad of Denison and Banks won two matches to move on. The Lady Colonel squad defeated Fugua and Johnson of Logan, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round and topped Allen’s Erica Oliver and Tamara Grienenberger in round two. Denison and Banks will see the top-seeded squad of Elizabeth Penn and Erin Henry, of Bowling Green, today.
Glasgow’s Heather Fields and Rachel Calvert, along with Caverna’s Dawn Richardson and Havyn West, won opening round matches.
Fields and Calvert opened with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Hart’s Wanetta Rice and Elizabeth Clark. The Lady Scottie team fell to Pennington and Wentworth, who are seeded seventh, in the second round.
Richardson and West picked up a 6-0, 6-1, win over Erica Oliver and Savannah Atwood, from Allen, in the first round. The Lady Colonel pair fell to fifth-seeded Edwards and Adams in round two.
