Scotties top Bruins, 5-2

The Glasgow Scotties used aggressive hitting and solid defense to defeat the Central Hardin Bruins 5-2 on Tuesday at Richardson Field.

“I’m just pleased with our energy,” Glasgow coach Sam Royse said. “We seem to have more energy about us right now. We seem to be playing with some confidence. We seem to be playing with some more enthusiasm and intensity. We are bearing down on pitch after pitch.”

The Scotties picked up six hits on the night, with three of those hits coming in the first inning. Tyler Howard pitched a complete game victory for Glasgow. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked four.

In the first inning, the Bruins jumped out of the gate swinging the bats and hit some hard balls to make the Scottie defense make some plays. The Bruins scored a run on three hits to take a 1-0 lead.

Senior Corey Witcher countered in the bottom of the first with a first-pitch solo home run to knot the game at 1-1.

“A lot of times if Corey goes good the rest of the ball club goes good as well,” Royse said. “Also, we have some other kids that can do the same thing and that’s what we like to have, a bunch of kids get hot at the same time.”

Aaron Copass drew a walk to get on base and Charlie Mudd singled to move Copass to third. Mikey Glass grounded out to second to score Copass and give the Scotties a 2-1 lead. Craig Mosier connected on a solo home run to push the lead to 3-1 after the first inning.

Glasgow added to its lead in the third. Copass and Mudd started the inning off with a pair of singles to give the Scotties two base runners. A wild pitch by the Bruins allowed Copass to reach home plate and push the lead to 4-1.

“I am pleased that all of a sudden that we’ve gotten more aggressive at the plate,” Royse said. “We are taking some good swings at some good pitches. The law of averages says the more good swings that you put on good pitches, you’ve got chances to hit them. We have played pretty solid baseball the last couple of days.”

With good pitching and solid defense the Scotties shut down the Bruins in the third and fourth innings and in the fifth pitcher Tyler Howard started the 1-6-3 double play to get two big outs.

“He is a kid that we are real proud of,” Royse said. “He has been one of those real pleasant surprises that we didn’t know was going to happen. We didn’t know that he would come in there and give us the type of quality outings that he’s done.

“Certainly I’m real proud of how he pitched today. We got some good defensive help out there - two double plays and a big pickoff from our catcher (Jordan York), who defends his position real well.”

The Scotties added one more run in the fifth inning to make the score 5-1. Mudd started the inning with a leadoff walk and stole second base to give the Scotties a runner in scoring position. The Bruin pitcher balked to advance Mudd to third and a wild pitch allowed Mudd to score.

The Bruins threatened in the sixth inning but could only score one more run to close the lead to 5-2.

The Scotties have had hot bats in the last two games, registering 15 hits, that has led to back-to-back wins.
