Central defeats Lady Scotties, 4-1

By JOHN VERSER
Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW Glasgow was “a play or two” away from picking up a win and ending its recent skid on Saturday.

But two errors and a couple of other misplays cost the Lady Scotties in a 4-1 loss to Warren Central, the team’s sixth straight defeat.

“We’ve lost six straight now, and I think four of the six, we’re right there, a play or two away from winning,” Glasgow coach Steven Murphy said. “It’s very frustrating. What we have to do is keep battling and keep coming to the park every day with a good frame of mind that that day is going to be the day that the tide turns.

“I’ve seen it many times where teams struggle and then for some unknown reason, boom, the light turns on and things just turn on a dime. So hopefully that’s the way this will be.”

Glasgow fell to 11-15 with the loss while Central improved to 10-11 with the win.

Things looked to be turning up for the Lady Scotties as they held the Lady Dragons scoreless for the first four innings.

Glasgow took the lead in the fourth. Micha Elmore reached on an error before scoring on Paige Lee’s two-out RBI double that gave the Lady Scotties a 1-0 lead.

A Glasgow error gave Central a leadoff runner in the sixth, and after a fly out, a hit on an infield pop up put two runners on. The Lady Dragons scored two runs in the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

“Like we’ve said all year long, I’d like to say, probably 11 out of the 15 losses that we’ve had, we’ve been right in there with a chance to win if we could just make a play or two here or there,” Murphy said. “And in the sixth inning, that’s what happened again. We get a line drive, it was a hard hit ball, but one we got a glove on - hopefully we can squeeze the next time. And then we get an infield pop up that we just couldn’t make a play on that probably should have been made. And that’s three outs right there, and they don’t score.

“Hopefully, by a week from Tuesday, which is tournament time, we’ll make those plays and execute.”

Glasgow threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Shelby Ray singled with one out and Elmore walked. Both runners moved up on Haley Perkins’ fly out to right before Paige Lee’s fly out to center ended the inning.

Central added a pair of runs in the seventh and took advantage of Glasgow’s second error of the game to take a 4-1 advantage.

Kelsey Bowles led off the seventh for the Lady Scotties with a single, before a ground out, a line out and a pop out ended the game.

Blair Dennison gave up four runs (two earned) on 10 hits to take the loss for Glasgow. She struck out four and walked two.

Sarah Stanfield went five and one-third innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits to pick up the win for Central. She was hit by a line drive with one out in the sixth and left the game. Stanfield fanned seven and didn’t walk a batter.

Lee went 2-for-3 with the Lady Scotties’ lone RBI to lead the team offensively. Ray, Elmore and Bowles each had one hit.

Glasgow is back in action today with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Taylor County. The Lady Scotties travel to Bowling Green for a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday, host Metcalfe County Thursday at 5 p.m. and host Campbellsville Friday at 6 p.m.
