4th Region tennis tourney begins today

GLASGOW —
Area tennis teams will play for the right to advance to the state tournament starting today as the 4th Region Tennis Tournament gets under way.
The tournament, hosted by Barren County, runs through Thursday. Play is slated to begin each day between 3:30-4 p.m. Admission is free.
The first two rounds of boys singles and doubles will be played today, while the girls first two rounds are scheduled for Tuesday.
Quarterfinals and semifinals for both boys and girls will be played Wednesday, while the finals are slated for Thursday.
All singles matches on Monday and Tuesday will be played at Barren County High School, while doubles play will be held at Gorin Park. All matches on Wednesday and Thurdsay will be played at BCHS.
Four singles players and four doubles teams from both the boys and girls regional will advance to the state championship, which will be held May 22-24.
On the boys side, both Glasgow’s Eric Morosa, seeded second, and Metcalfe County’s Trey Shirley, seeded fourth, have byes in the opening round. Morosa will take on a competitor from either Russell County or Clinton County in the second round, which is also scheduled to be played Monday. Shirley will see Bowling Green’s Chris Boling or Glasgow’s Michael Morosa in the second round.
Barren’s Jared Guthrie and Matthew Bunnell, Caverna’s Patrick Bennett and Kyle Richardson, Monroe’s D. Irvin and Metcalfe’s Chris Moshier are also playing singles.
Three area boys doubles teams are seeded with the top five seeds receiving byes. Glasgow’s Brett Flener and Joel Padgett are the third seeded team and will take on either the Monroe duo of Harrison and Sheffield or a team from Logan County in the second round.
The Scotties’ Jake Morrow and Ky Bright are the fifth seeded doubles squad. After a first round bye, they will face either Barren’s Cameron Felkins and Colin Sparks or a duo from Allen County-Scottsville in the second round.
The seventh-seeded team, Caverna’s Kyle Bunnell and Blake Weaver, will take on Greenwood’s Zack Howard and Taylor Lindsey in the first round. If the Caverna duo moves on, they will face either Metcalfe’s Dylan Harris and Jesse Jones or a pair from Russell County.
Also in doubles play are Caverna’s Kenneth Minor and Austin Burke, Barren’s Kyle Gardner and Spencer Kerley and the Monroe duo of Poland and Sheffield.
Metcalfe’s Megan Stephens and Aspen Edwards enter girls singles play as the top ranked area competitors. Stephens is seeded second, and after a first round bye, will face Glasgow’s Maclean Lessenberry or Hart County’s P. Wilkerson in round two. Edwards will face Trojanette Whitney Botts in the opening round. The winner of that tilt will see either Glasgow’s Chandra Taylor or a competitor from Russell County.
Caverna’s Jordan Forbes and Jamie Hatcher, along with Barren’s Ashley Grabowski and Monroe’s J. Reecer are also in singles competition.
Three area girls doubles squads are among the top eight ranked teams in the region. The Metcalfe duo of Callie Jesse and Kendra Clark is the second seeded team while Barren’s Hilary Rickard and Laura Ross are rated third. Both teams receive byes in the opening round.
Jesse and Clark will see either Glasgow’s Jessica Lynch and Katelyn Baker or a team from Hart County in the second round. Rickard and Ross are set to face a team from either Franklin-Simpson or Clinton County in round two.
The Caverna team of Dylan Denison and Shelby Banks are seeded sixth. They will face a team from Logan in the opening round.
Glasgow’s Heather Fields and Rachel Calvert, Caverna’s Dawn Richardson and Havyn West, Barren’s Amanda Shives and Shandi Greene and Metcalfe’s Taylor Noe and Sydney Edwards are in the doubles tournament as well.
