FRANKLIN

Barren County rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to tie homestanding Franklin-Simpson and scored two runs in the eighth to pick up a 6-4 win as the Trojans split a pair of games on Saturday at the Wood Bat Tournament.

Barren dropped its first game of the day, 3-0, to Apollo.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the fifth and added two in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead heading into the final inning.

The Trojans battled back to tie things at 4-all. Jonathan Riddle singled to left with one out to start the rally. Bart Houchens then singled before Tyler Edmunds hit a double off the wall, driving in two, to cut the lead to 4-2.

Lucas Mohon moved Edmunds to third with a pinch hit single. Michael Fields doubled down the line, driving in Edmunds, to cut the lead to one. Tyler Richardson then executed a safety squeeze bunt as Zack Jones, in as a courtesy runner for Mohon, scored to knot the game at 4-4.

Mason Myatt walked and Miller singled to start things in the eighth inning. After Riddle fouled off a pair of bunt attempts, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Riddle then single into right to drive in Myatt and Miller to give Barren a 6-4 lead.

Houchens shut down the Wildcats in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.

Houchens pitched seven and one-third total innings in the game to pick up the win. He tossed the first five and one-third innings and gave up four runs, before being relieved by Jud Perkins. Perkins got a pair of outs in the sixth inning to end Franklin’s threat. Houchens moved back to the mound to start the seventh inning and tossed a scoreless pair of innings to end the game.

Miller, Riddle and Houchens had two hits each. Riddle drove in a pair of runs while Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Unearned runs doomed Barren for the second straight game in Saturday’s opening contest, a 3-0 loss to Apollo. The Trojans gave up three unearned runs in a 3-2 loss to Warren East on Friday, and gave up three unearned runs to lose to Apollo.

Richardson was the tough-luck loser for Barren, giving up three unearned runs in six innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. Edmunds tossed the game’s final inning.

Riddle went 2-for-3 to lead the Trojans offensively. Myatt, Miller, Jones and Fields each had a hit.

Barren is now 21-9 on the season. Apollo moved to 21-7 with three wins in the Wood Bat Tournament.

Barren is scheduled to take on Bowling Green today at 5 p.m. It is the first of four scheduled home games for the Trojans, who host Russell County Tuesday at 5 p.m., Hart County Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Franklin-Simpson Friday at 5 p.m.
