Trojans blank Scotties, 4-0

GLASGOW —
A delay in the start of Tuesday’s game due to late umpires didn’t distract Barren County.
The Trojans defeated cross town rival Glasgow 4-0 at Richardson Field to sweep the season series between the two teams.
“You know, I thought this game today was probably the best game we played all year,” Barren coach Scott Gillon said. “We got a great job off the mound today from Tyler Richardson. We were error free, we made the plays.
“Glasgow does a good job in putting the ball in play. Our approach at the plate has been the best its been all year.”
Richardson tossed seven shutout innings to pick up the win. He gave up just three hits and didn’t walk a batter. The Trojans didn’t commit an error in the field and had six hits at the plate.
In the first inning, senior Blake Crabtree led off with a hard hit single into center field. After Crabtree stole second, Mason Myatt brought him in with a single to right field to give Barren a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, Corey Witcher led off with a single down the third base line. Aaron Copass put down a bunt to move Witcher over to second to give the Scotties a runner in scoring position. Glasgow couldn’t score as Witcher was stranded.
“We had a couple of scoring opportunities,” Glasgow coach Sam Royse said. “We couldn’t get any knocks at that time. We hit some balls hard right at them and they made some plays.”
The Trojans added to their lead in the third inning. Tyler Richardson singled before Crabtree’s 2-run home run, his third round-tripper of the season, to extend the lead to 3-0.
“Anybody that has been around Barren County athletics knows that Blake Crabtree is a gamer,” Gillon said. “He comes ready to play. We just now got him back in the field about a week ago. He has been tearing the cover off the ball.”
The Scotties went down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings and were unable to get the ball past the Trojan defense.
“I don’t think we played with any energy or any enthusiasm whatsoever today, and that is disappointing,” Royse said. “The difference in the ball game, really and truly in a real close ball game, they got a couple of timely hits with a guy in scoring position in the first inning and then they got the big home run ball. From a scoring-runs stand point, that was the biggest difference in the game.”
Barren improved to 20-7 overall and concluded district play with a 5-1 record. The Trojans tied Allen County-Scottsville for the top spot in the 15th District. The two teams split a pair of regular season meetings, so the top seed in the upcoming district tournament will be determined by a coin flip.
Glasgow fell to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in district play with the loss. The Scotties, the third seed in the district tournament, will face either Barren or Allen in the first round, pending the coin toss.
Both teams are back in action Thursday. The Trojans host Warren East and the Scotties travel to Grayson County.
