Cheer Clinic
The Glasgow High School cheerleaders and the YMCA are hosting a Cheer Clinic for youth ages 4 to 14. Sessions meet Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 15 and run through Feb. 5. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Preregistration is encouraged at the YMCA.

Activate program to end childhood obesity
Activate, the YMCA’s effort to curb childhood obesity, began last week and continues for four more weeks.
Activate allows a child ages 7-14 to come to the YMCA right after school and participate in a 40-minute group-exercise class. Classes are designed to be fun and to keep the child moving.
Elementary-school classes begin at 2:50 p.m. and older classes at 3:35 p.m. Students at Red Cross, Highland and South Green elementary schools can ride the bus to the Y and then be picked up by parents after class.
Fees for the five-week program are $24 for YMCA members and $35 for program participants. A child can pick and choose the classes he or she attends, up to one class per day.
Classes take place in the group-fitness room, the gym, pool and in the cycling room. Kids are exposed to a variety of exercises through Activate.
Call the YMCA at 651-9622 for more information or to register your child.

YMCA joining fee reduced
The YMCA is offering a promotion during January to help defray the cost of joiner’s fees.
This month, a person’s joining fee is the same as the day he or she joins the Y. For example, today’s joiner’s fee is $11. Tomorrow it will be $12 and it increases a dollar a day. For a person who is purchasing a family membership, today’s savings is $79.
The Y also has adopted new, more inclusive income guidelines for scholarship eligibility. If you think you may be eligible for financial assistance, please call or stop by the YMCA to learn of the new guidelines to determine your eligibility.
January’s promotion doesn’t stop with reduced joiner’s fees. There are contests and games for both new and existing members. The group-fitness schedule includes a couple of new classes, including a Friday night Zumba class; the Y now offers six Zumba classes each week.

Men’s basketball league
Register now for the YMCA’s men’s basketball league, to begin in mid-January.
Individual registration is $30 or a coach can register a team for $300. Depending on the number of teams registered, the season will include approximately six games and also playoffs. The season will conclude with a tournament, with the winning team being awarded t-shirts.
Teams may use their own uniforms, but they must match and must have a number on the shirt. The YMCA can also assist a team in ordering shirts from a local vendor.
