GLASGOW —

The Glasgow Middle School Green Team is hosting a sneaker recycling drive. Community members, students, and teachers are asked to drop off their old sneakers and make a positive impact on the environment. The sneaker drive kicks off at the Glasgow Scotties football game against Bardstown on Friday. Collection bins will be available at Hank Royse Stadium on the Glasgow High School campus. The game starts at 7 p.m. and students will be on hand to talk with community members about their project.

The group is working with Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, which will turn the old sneakers into a product called “Nike Grind.” This raw product is turned into many surfaces including; gym floors, outdoor and indoor synthetic courts, running tracks, playground and safety surfaces, and for use under carpet. The product has been used in many different places, including the Lance Armstrong Foundation Headquarters and LeBron James’ personal court and playground.

“The students wanted to do more than just traditional recycling of paper and plastic at GMS,” said Green Team sponsor Leslie Brauer. “They wanted to reuse and reduce, and get the community involved. The Green Team members thought sneaker recycling was a great way to make those goals reality. ”

The sneaker recycling drive will continue through Dec. 13 with drop off bins inside the Glasgow Middle School lobby. The students’ goal is to collect 500 pair of shoes.

Brauer, a teacher at Glasgow Middle School, said the students are also learning how to reduce energy usage, including shutting off unused computers and lights at school and at home. Other projects include collecting eye glasses for the Lions Clubs International, and collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House.

The Glasgow Middle School Green Team is made up of about 25 students in the sixth through eighth grades. It is part of C.O.R.E. Club, afterschool activities that are funded in part by a 21st Century Learning grant.
