Local school officials have had their hands full with minimizing flu contagion levels.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of flu cases have been elevated nationwide, reaching epidemic level earlier this month. CDC officials have said this flu season has been particularly hard on seniors and children, resulting in about 37 pediatric deaths thus far. The elevated risk for children has made teachers and janitors step up their sanitation procedures.
Cortni Crews, Barren County Schools director of pupil personnel, said the flu outbreak was the worst just before Christmas break. She said there were “pockets of illness” hitting some of the schools and less noticeable in others. Currently, the district wide student attendance rate is around 94.9 percent, in comparison to 95.4 percent this time last year.
“Thankfully we haven’t seen the flu virus hit the entire school district,” Crews said.
