SGE hoists super’s award By LISA SIMPSON STRANGE Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — The students and teachers of South Green Elementary School have joined a very exclusive club.
Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Kathy Goff and school board members visited the school on Nov. 6 to recognize them for achieving an overall score of 101.4 on the 2007-08 Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS). Goff has established the CATS Superintendent’s 100 Club Award to recognize those schools in the district that have reached 100 or better on the assessment. South Green faculty and staff were rewarded with a catered lunch served by members of the board. Goff said she wanted to start something new in the district to recognize achievement. “As you know, all schools have until the year 2014 to reach the proficiency goal of 100 and South Green this past testing session reached over 100 actually,” she said. “And being new to the district, I wanted to start some kind of special recognition for that and so we established a Superintendent’s 100 Club.” The school was presented with a “CATS Superintendent 100 Club Award” banner. A matching one will hang in the board room at the district’s central office. Goff said the board is really excited by South Green’s performance and noted that all the other schools in the district have overall scores in the 90s. Highland Elementary scored 95.2; Glasgow Middle School, 95.3; Glasgow High School, 90; and the Glasgow district scored 94.3 overall. All the schools exceeded their goals. “This next year we anticipate that we’ll have another school or two make it,” she said. South Green Elementary Principal Bill Philbeck said there was no one reason for the school’s success. “It’s a very intentional and focused curriculum,” he said. “We use all available resources and look at each child individually. The teaching staff is phenomenal and we have wonderful parents.” Goff said she’s pleased there is a new way to show support for the schools. “It’s just a small way to say we recognize your efforts. We’re appreciative of all your hard work and dedication and we wanted some kind of visual (sign) the community and parents would recognize of how successful that school was,” she said.
