McMullen makes Greek digestible By AMBER DILLEY Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — Kate McMullen found a way to have her French Bulldog, Toby, immortalized — he was the inspiration for the cover of the first of her series of books about Greek myths.
“The cover for ‘Have a Hot Time, Hades’ went through quite a few changes, a few artists, before we could decide on one we all liked,” McMullen said. “Eventually, I found an artist that I liked who gave me the idea of how Cerberus looks on the cover — like Toby.” The book is part of the Myth-o-Mania series that puts a new spin on the Greek myths and is offered at the Red Cross Elementary Library, where McMullen spoke to fourth- and sixth-graders Tuesday morning. McMullen answered questions from the students about the stories and discussed the cover-making process. “An editor has charge of the covers, as well as suggesting and making changes to the text,” she told the students. “It’s quite a process to get the right cover. My editor, Susan, was a fantastic text editor, but sometimes I think her strength was not in covers. We did not always see eye-to-eye when choosing one.” McMullen said the cover is one of the most important parts of the book. “They’re like little posters advertising the books,” she said. McMullen said the myths partly inspired her to write books. “I just liked reading a lot and started wondering if I could write one of those books I liked reading,” she said. “I always liked writing too and the myths themselves inspired me to write about them. I really loved writing ‘Phone Home, Persephone.’” The story is about the tale of Persephone, who has a cell phone and can call home when she ends up in the underworld. McMullen was the last author to visit Red Cross Elementary for this year. “We’re working with a school in Bowling Green to decide who we’d like to have for next year,” said Amy Shipley, librarian. “I usually ask for recommendations from other schools and find out the cost. It depends on what the students are interested in and how much money we have for travel for the author. All of the authors we have come in have books in the library, so the students are familiar with the work.” McMullen has written over 50 books, including the Myth-o-Mania series, The Dragon Slayers Academy series, Meg’s Prairie Dairy series, the Fluffy series and others.
