MEETING: Barren County Board of Education

DATE: Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009

ACTIONS: The board approved the following change orders for North Jackson Elementary: Install a wood spacer to maintain electrical code in the media center, $577; construct and install gypsum header across the top of the trophy case, $687; remove excess mud and pooled water from the building envelope, $1,957; fill in sinkhole that was discovered while laying sewer service line to new ball fields, $906; upgrade Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) in the audio/visual room, $2,039; install additional outlets, $544; additional tack strips to be installed by board staff, $943; add six bollards around dumpster enclosure, $820; and to erect scaffolding twice during the project due to hawks nesting and the delay in finishing the clock tower, $822, for a total of $9,295. The board approved the 2008-09 annual financial report and the local education agency application for state fiscal stabilization grant funds. The following consent items were approved: minutes of the previous meeting, bills, salaries and accounts, monthly financial reports, out-of-state/overnight student travel, medical leave of absence without pay for employee, appointment of Bo Matthews to Certified Evaluation Appeals Panel Board, Spectrum Care Academy agreement, ARC chairpersons, food service supply bids, contract for services for an energy manager position, half-time maintenance tech position and shortened school day for a handicapped student.

REPORTS: Superintendent Jerry Ralston and staff members gave recommendations and reports to the board.

RECOGNITIONS: The board recognized Janet Sturgeon, secretary at Red Cross Elementary, as Classified Employee of the Month, and Chrisn King, teacher at RCE, as Certified Employee of the Month.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Ralston announced the board plans to keep the same tax rate as last year of 56.5 cents per $100 assessed value on property. There will be a public hearing and special called meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 5:30 and 6 p.m. for discussion of the rate.
