With just a little over two months left, the Barren County Board of Education approved several more change orders for North Jackson Elementary School at Thursday’s meeting.
The first change order was to reduce the size of the classroom marker boards for a deduction of $602.
Darrell Wheeler, construction manager, said this was because the original size did not fit the technology going into the classrooms.
The second change order was to install safety curtains at the end of the gym bleachers at a cost of $1,920.
“This is a safety thing, to deter the kids from going under the bleachers when they are extended,” said Jim Ivy, with RBS Designs, contractor for the building.
The third change order is to install power from a local circuit to the internal light fixture at a cost of $690.
“This is so the outside lights can be turned off and won’t be connected to the inside lights,” Ivy said.
Wheeler added: “Originally it was all on or all off. This way, we can have outside lights on and inside lights off or vise versa.”
The fourth change order was to install a roof ladder from the cafeteria roof to the gym roof for maintenance purposes at a cost of $2,800.
Board member Tammy Groce joked: “Is it made of gold?”
“No, but it’s made of steel and has a safety cage on it,” Ivy responded.
The final change order is to pay for the crew to work on ruts and ponding issues at the work site due to the heavy rains at a cost of $811.
The recent downpours have slowed down construction.
“It’s going to be tight, but it’s going to be done,” Wheeler said. “The classrooms are just about ready to get floors done. The media center and the cafeteria is what’s slipped behind in this last rain. We’re taking steps to speed that process up. We feel confident it will be done.”
Superintendent Jerry Ralston said: “We don’t care how tight it is, just as long as it gets done.”
Wheeler also reported as expected, the gym won’t be completed by the time school starts in August, but the rest will be done.
