Barren County High School’s chorus will present the musical “The Wonderful World of ...” this weekend.
The show will feature songs from many childhood movies, including “Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Snow White” and “Pinocchio,” among others.
“We have selections from about 30 different movies you probably saw as a child,” said Stephanie Hensley, chorus director.
The cast features 47 high school students, plus 23 students from Cub Run Elementary.
Hensley explained her aunt oversees the performances at Cub Run Elementary and has been her mentor for many years, so she took advantage of the opportunity to work on the show with her aunt and her students.
The high school’s chorus does at least one major production each school year, usually during the spring semester.
“We do other things during the fall semester, like Christmas concerts, but we usually do one big production once a year,” Hensley said.
The high school students have been rehearsing since January, but didn’t get a chance to practice with the elementary students until this week.
Jessie Cooper, a senior, admitted she was a bit worried how that would work, but at the same time she exhibited a lot of enthusiasm about being a part of the show.
“It’s really been amazing,” she said.
Cooper plays the title role in “Alice in Wonderland” throughout the show, except for when she sings a song from “Beauty and the Beast.”
Cooper has been a member of the high school’s chorus for four years and has a deep interest in music.
“I’m actually going to minor in it in college,” she said.
Joining Cooper as a member of the cast is Luke Davis, also a senior.
Davis sings three solos during the show, including “A Whole New World,” from the movie “Aladdin,” and “In the Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from the “Lion King.”
Davis wanted to be a part of the production because he loves to sing.
“It’s as simple as that,” he said. “I’ve been performing all my life and this is another way for me to perform in front of people and kind of show them that singing can be really fun.”
He thinks he may do something related to music after high school, but he has yet to make a definite decision.
Also appearing in the show is Brandon Drury, also a senior.
Like Davis, Drury sings solos in the show.
“I sing the solo of the Beast and I sing the solo of Simba,” he said.
He also sings “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.”
Drury has enjoyed being a part of the show.
“Mrs. Hensley is a great teacher and she puts a lot of effort in these shows, as does the student body, and they turn out really good and they are really fun,” he said.
Drury aspires to have a career in business, but is hoping to tie in music in some form or fashion.
“A Wonderful World of ...” will be presented Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Barren County High School’s auditorium.
Tickets are $3 for one night, and $5 for both nights. Children 4 and under will be admitted free.
