Heritage Center combines art and pastries By GINA KINSLOW Glasgow Daily Times HORSE CAVE — Gene Bowen and Karen McGinn stopped for a bite to eat at a local restaurant after visiting Mammoth Cave National Park last year and fell in love with the town.
“Everybody was so nice no matter where we went,” said Bowen. Their experience was so pleasant that they decided maybe Horse Cave was the right location for their latest business venture. Bowen is a Web designer and photographer, while McGinn is an artist and a caterer. So the business partners decided to move from their home in Atlanta to Horse Cave and buy a downtown building to house the Heritage Arts Center, which features Bowen’s art gallery and McGinn’s Gallery Donuts and Bakery. Bowen and McGinn purchased their building from the Horse Cave Development Corporation, an organization that was formed a couple of years ago to promote the location of businesses in Horse Cave’s downtown area. “We have been in discussion with them for about eight months before they made their final decision on it. That was certainly something we were interested in as a type of business we were looking for. We put out our best effort to lure them here. They’ve been really good to work with.,” said Kenny Russell, president of the Horse Cave Development Corporation. “They’ve really worked hard to get this open in a very short period of time. They had all their preliminary work completed before they got here so they knew exactly what they were going to do when they got here.” Both businesses have recently opened. The art gallery is currently displaying paintings and sculptures by McGinn and photographs by Bowen. Also on exhibit is a gold parade saddle made by Ted Flowers in the 1960s. “To our knowledge it is the only one in existence,” said Joe Forsythe, who works at the gallery. “This is the first time the saddle has been on display in four decades.” Bowen and McGinn are interested in displaying the work of other artists in the gallery and are developing a registry for artists who are interested in submitting their work for consideration. Gallery Donuts, which is located adjacent to the art gallery, features more than just donuts. It also offers cinnamon rolls, cookies, muffins, bagels, cakes, tarts, pies and Napoleons. McGinn made the decision to open a bakery, because Horse Cave didn’t have one. “There wasn’t one anywhere,” she said. “There wasn’t one for 30 miles.” Bakery customers get to explore their own artistic talent by decorating their own donuts and cookies. The bakery has regular business hours and will also be open before and after performances at the Kentucky Repertory Theatre and during other events, McGinn said.
