OUR VIEW: Road projects would be worthy endeavors in area

GLASGOW — As Barren County looks with increased focus toward its long-term economic health, improved infrastructure is a vital factor in the equation. Just as our vision and thinking must evolve, so should the physical framework of our communities.

It’s exciting, then, to see the state’s House of Representatives support significant road projects in Barren County. Included in the Democrat-controlled House’s $4.5 billion, two-year road plan that was approved Tuesday are a number of enhancements in this area. The Republican state Senate is expected to alter the bill, but we’re hopeful lawmakers recognize the value in the local endeavors.

The most visible of the potential projects – which, it should be noted, are likely years from becoming reality, even if OK’d by the Senate – would be the widening of Ky. 90 for essentially the entire distance between Cave City and Glasgow.

“I think it is definitely important to get that four-laned ... ,” Cave City Mayor Dwayne Hatcher told the Daily Times this week. “Anything southbound coming off of Interstate 65 comes through (Cave City).”

Expanding Ky. 90 would open the Cave City area to increased interstate traffic, which would help boost business along that corridor. It would also create a more useful connection between Glasgow and I-65 in northern Barren County, which surely would be of interest to a number of area industries.

Similarly, a proposed widening of Ky. 1297 from Donnelley Drive to South L. Rogers Wells Boulevard – along with a widening of Donnelley Drive – would improve access to an often-congested area that draws residential, school and industrial traffic and has room for even further development.

Of course, there’s a lot of money wrapped up in this bill – more than $24 million in Barren County alone. But there are also potential benefits that outweigh the initial price tag. We’ll be watching closely how the Senate forms its version of the measure.
