YOUR VIEW: Thanks given for help in honoring distinguished women of Barren County

GLASGOW — Dear Editor,

The Glasgow Business and Professional Women’s Club wishes to express its deep appreciation to the community for helping make the placement of two bronze historical markers on our courthouse lawn a reality. Without the generosity and cooperation of so many people and organizations, this important project could not have been accomplished.

Nettie B.C. Depp and Willa Brown Chappell were two local women whose accomplishments were legendary.  We are honored that our organization could lead our community in honoring these two women who are so very deserving. Their stories inspired us and we trust future generations will be inspired just as much.

We are deeply grateful to the Barren County Fiscal Court for allowing the first tributes to Barren County women to be placed on our community lawn for current and future generations to see.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sam Terry for sharing the stories of these two honorees and inspiring us to want to see them recognized in our community.

We were honored by the presence of Eleanor Jordan, executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Women, who effectively reminded us why the honorees and other women have been so important in Kentucky’s history. We were moved by the outpouring of appreciation from the families of Miss Depp and Mrs. Chappell; their presence made the unveiling ceremony all the more moving.

We thank all who joined together to make the dedication one of the most memorable days our community has experienced. We appreciate each and every person who so willingly helped to make the unveiling celebration a great success.

Finally, we thank all of the individuals and organizations who gave monetary contributions to the project; we could not have done it without you. We especially thank the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society and First Baptist Church for their generous contributions.

We are humbled by your support of our organization in this worthy cause and we thank all who helped us in any way.  We are very grateful.
