OUR VIEW: Eaton must follow his own example now

GLASGOW — On Aug. 2, 2008, the Daily Times praised Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton for his swift and decisive move to “fix” issues at Barren County Corrections Center. He had been handed the title of interim jailer following then-jailer Leland Cox being arrested on misdemeanor charges.

Cox had done the right thing by stepping aside after his arrest. He did not give up his position, but did allow the Barren County Fiscal Court to pick someone else to run the jail during the criminal proceedings. At least, initially he did, but everyone knows the rest of the story and for the purposes of this writing, there is no point to rehash it.

The point now is to suggest our sheriff should step aside and allow the fiscal court to appoint someone else from outside his department to manage it during the criminal proceedings in which he and three of his deputies are involved.
