The beauty of inflections Or the beauty of innuendoes, The blackbird whistling Or just after. — Wallace Stevens, “13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” It was an amazing week, no doubt. Our country took a historic step in the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president. Since Tuesday night, there has been much discussion about shedding our ugly past of slavery and Jim Crow laws. Of race riots and civil rights marches. Of Rodney King and Reginald Denny. Of what Martin Luther King Jr. said: “We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.” The sentence comes from his speech given as he stood before the Lincoln Monument on Aug. 28, 1963. He opened by paying tribute to Abraham Lincoln. Everyone knows the speech as “I Have a Dream” but it is so much more. That sentence stands out because Obama’s election, for some, represents the essence of the principals of our nation. All things are possible in America. As symbolism, the election of a mixed race president affirms the American dream — and that of King’s. There is a well of euphoria in which we can swim at this moment. It’s deep and there is much to be explored. I’m swimming in it, but there is also the cold air of reality. Obama, as transcendent a figure as he is, still faces the tests of presidency. He’s walked into a tumultuous time. Wars on two fronts, economic instability and a demographically changing nation are only a few challenges before him.
