I understand that the article in the Thursday, Aug. 28, Glasgow Daily Times concerning Advanced Placement classes at Caverna High School was written on the basis of the information received from us and I further understand that the article was designed to deal with the subject of AP classes. However, the headline suggested that we in some way are deficient in the opportunities for our students to take advanced classes. We are very fortunate to be located in an area where we have a college campus (Western Kentucky University) nearby. Our board, as well as the administration at the high school, is dedicated to making sure that our students utilize this valuable resource. We (at the expense of the district) transport 24 students to WKU campus to take college classes, which will result in our students earning college credit. In my estimation, this is as equally rigorous as an AP curriculum. Since the goal of the AP class is to expose students to the rigor of a college curriculum and to allow students to earn college credit, I see our program doing both with the extra benefit of receiving the instruction in a college setting. In addition, the credit earned is not based upon one test given at the end of the course. It is based upon a whole semester of work. Many times there are different ways to achieve a goal and in our district we see what is in our estimation a better way to achieve the same result that AP courses seek to achieve. As the old saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat and sometimes the other way is better! Dr. Sam Dick Superintendent of the Caverna Independent School District
