Fourth offers many escapes

GLASGOW

By the time most of you sit down to read this, the weekend will be upon us.

Thanks to the Fourth of July falling on a Friday, a majority of businesses will cease operations tomorrow, thus allowing for that all-important three-day sabbatical from work (all restaurant servers, hostesses and drive-thru attendants have my deepest sympathies).

Like we needed another reason to love the Fourth of July.

It’s the ultimate slice of pure Americana, when families and friends gather for a cooling dip in the pool, a relaxing boat ride on the lake, a showing of the latest Will Smith blockbuster in an air conditioned multiplex, an exciting trip to a favorite baseball stadium, which could be Yankee, Wrigley, Fenway or some other, and the mouth-watering taste of a perfectly grilled hamburger or hot dog.

Then, once the sun goes down, the show begins.

The clear nighttime sky is the perfect setting for this assortment of vivid colors and thundering booms. Yes, I don’t think anything brings out the childlike wonder in all of us quite like fireworks.

In the Fourth of Julys of yesteryear, my cousins Mackay and Elliott were the undisputed masters of ceremony when it came time for the show. They reveled in lighting all the ammunition we had available, all set to the “oohs” and “aahs” of everyone in the audience.

It would often turn into a game, where the two would request my assistance, as well as one other, in lighting up multiple fireworks at the same time to ensure everyone was getting all the “bang” for their buck.

More importantly, the Fourth of July is the anniversary of our nation’s birth. This year, ol’ red, white and blue turns 232 and, boy, does she look good for her age.

We may be of one the youngest countries on the planet, but history has shown that there’s plenty of room for us on the playground along with all the big kids.

And while we have our faults, I can’t think of another place I’d rather call home (a little patriotism oozing through). Happy birthday, USA.

Hopefully, everyone reading this will have a fun, happy and, most importantly, safe Fourth of July.

And hey, if nothing else, just grin at the fact that most of you don’t have to go to work tomorrow. To those who do, well, again, my sympathies.

I’ve got to work on Saturday if that makes you feel any better.
