Mothers are special women

Sunday is Mother’s Day. I am blessed to have several important women in my life, women who have helped me become who I am and women who continue to guide me.
Ann is the woman who gave me life. Shortly after I was born, she held me, fed me, whispered in my ear, then handed me to the social worker who would place me with the people waiting to adopt me.
Twenty-two years later, she initiated a search for me through the adoption agency. At the time, the tragic story of Lisa Steinberg was all over the news. The beautiful 6-year-old girl was beaten to death by the man who adopted her. He and his common-law wife also had adopted a little boy, whom police found – filthy and hungry – tethered to a crib.
Soon other horrid stories emerged about adopted children being abused and sometimes killed by the parents who were supposed to love and care for them.
Ann says she just needed to know that I was all right, that she had made the best choice for me.
I was and she did.
Today we have a special relationship, one I am thankful for. It took a lot of years to get here, but the journey was worth the trials and the tears.
My mom is, well, my mom.
She’s my strength when I am weak, the gentle guiding force when I am off track, my cheerleader and one of my best friends. And she still assumes the mom stance when I do something boneheaded, calling me on the carpet if needed.
It was not easy for her when the adoption agency called and said my birth mother had initiated a search. It was scary and it was an uncertain situation.
My mom helped me weather the rough patches when Ann and I first started exchanging letters. She sheltered me when I reached a point where I was feeling overwhelmed, scared and not sure I wanted to continue contact. She knew I was hurting, but she couldn’t fix it.
Ann and my mom have never met or spoken to each other. It’s something my mom is not comfortable with. Someday I hope that changes.
My husband is a great partner, father and friend. I thank my mother-in-law for raising a fine son.
She is a woman of quiet strength whose resolve has been tested beyond what I can imagine over the past few years. Her heart has been torn and – I hope and pray – is being mended.
I count my mother-in-law among the women who matter so very much to me.
On this Mother’s Day, I will offer a prayer of thanks for these women, all of whom have a special place in my heart and in my life. I love each one of them.
