CHEERS & JEERS: Construction locally paints positive picture

GLASGOW —
There is much doom and gloom on the nightly news broadcasts about the state of the nation’s economy.
There’s much concern about the condition of our economy locally with the announcements in the last year of factories closing or downsizing.
But there are signs that we are weathering the economic downtown well.
The most promising sign is the continued growth of service industries and the construction related to that growth. If a community is at an economic standstill, then there is no new construction.
There will be those who will say that retail jobs are not replacements for lost factory jobs. They are correct. But to that end, there is also good news.
In February, March Coatings Inc. announced the moving of part of its operation to Barren County. It will initially employee 30 people, but the door is open to expansion.
Also, Akebono announced the relocation of about 100 jobs to its Glasgow plant. Some of those positions will likely be filled by people relocating from Springfield, but there will also be positions open for area residents.
Sitel Operating Corporation is still bringing its call center to Glasgow. It will be on the hill adjacent to the Western Kentucky University — Glasgow campus.
Many people who may have been unable to work in factories because of physical limitations, may be able to find work at the call center. Employees at Sitel call centers are not making sales calls. They serve as information providers for various other corporations in industries such as automotive, financial, health care, travel and tourism, communications and technology industries in North America.
We understand that there is no substitute for the jobs that have been lost, especially for those people who may have spent their entire adult life working for one factory.
But that doesn’t mean we must spend all of our time and energy focused on the negative aspects of our community.
There are positive things happening. All we need do is open our eyes and see them.
It’s time we started paying attention to what’s right in our community.
